Swatch x Audemars Piguet Royal Pop: Everything You Need to Know

Swatch x Audemars Piguet Royal Pop: Everything You Need to Know

The Swatch x Audemars Piguet Royal Pop is one of the most unexpected watch collaborations of 2026.

Officially launched in May, the collection brings together two very different sides of Swiss watchmaking: Audemars Piguet's iconic Royal Oak design language and the colourful, unconventional approach for which Swatch is known.

But rather than simply creating a more accessible Royal Oak-style wristwatch, the two brands did something rather different.

The Royal Pop consists of eight mechanical Bioceramic pocket watches, each designed to be worn or displayed in several different ways.

In this guide, we'll cover what the Swatch x Audemars Piguet collaboration is, how it relates to the Royal Oak, how the watches work, all eight colourways and where you can buy the Royal Pop in the UK.

What is the Swatch x Audemars Piguet Royal Pop?

The Royal Pop is an official collaboration between Audemars Piguet and Swatch, unveiled in May 2026.

That point is worth making because, at first glance, the idea of a Swatch and Audemars Piguet collaboration might sound surprising.

Audemars Piguet is one of Switzerland's best-known luxury watchmakers, while Swatch is recognised for making Swiss watches considerably more accessible and playful.

Royal Pop brings elements of both brands together.

The collection takes inspiration from two important designs:

  • the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak, first introduced in 1972; and
  • the modular Swatch POP watches of the 1980s.

The result is neither a traditional Royal Oak nor a conventional Swatch.

Instead, it's a collection of eight brightly coloured mechanical pocket watches designed around Pop Art and the idea that a watch doesn't necessarily have to stay on your wrist.

When was the Swatch x Audemars Piguet collection released?

The Audemars Piguet x Swatch Royal Pop officially launched on 16 May 2026.

The watches were released through selected Swatch stores, with purchases limited to one watch per person, per store, per day. Swatch has also said that the collection will remain available for several months rather than describing it as a one-day-only launch.

This is an important distinction for collectors.

Although availability of individual colourways can be limited, the Royal Pop shouldn't automatically be described as a numbered or strictly limited-edition collection.

Why does the Royal Pop look like an Audemars Piguet Royal Oak?

The influence of the Royal Oak is immediately recognisable.

The Royal Oak has become famous for details including its eight-sided bezel, exposed hexagonal screws and distinctive textured dial.

Royal Pop deliberately reinterprets many of these features.

The octagonal bezel

Each Royal Pop uses the rounded octagonal form closely associated with the Royal Oak.

The number eight actually runs throughout the entire collection: there are eight watches, eight sides to the bezel and eight screws around it.

The eight hexagonal screws

Another obvious reference is the set of eight screws positioned around the bezel.

Some of the colourways use contrasting screws as part of the design. The white Huit Blanc, for example, uses screws in multiple colours, giving a particularly playful interpretation of the familiar Royal Oak feature.

The Tapisserie-style dial

All eight watches also use a Tapisserie-effect dial, referencing one of the Royal Oak's most recognisable visual characteristics.

Royal Pop therefore clearly draws on Audemars Piguet's design history without trying to be a conventional Royal Oak.

Is the Swatch x Audemars Piguet Royal Pop a wristwatch?

Interestingly, no — Royal Pop is fundamentally a pocket watch.

This is one of the most unusual aspects of the collaboration.

The watch head can be removed from its attachment and used with different accessories. Swatch offers three lanyard lengths as well as a removable stand, allowing the watch to be worn around the neck, attached to a bag, carried traditionally or displayed as a small desk watch.

It's a deliberate reference to the modular nature of Swatch's original POP designs.

For collectors accustomed to traditional wristwatches, this makes Royal Pop substantially different from collaborations such as the MoonSwatch.

What movement does the Royal Pop use?

Despite its playful appearance, Royal Pop isn't simply a quartz fashion accessory.

Each watch is powered by a newly developed hand-wound version of Swatch's SISTEM51 mechanical movement.

The movement offers more than 90 hours of power reserve and incorporates a Nivachron balance spring. The movement can also be viewed through the transparent caseback.

This makes the mechanical side of the collaboration particularly interesting.

SISTEM51 was originally notable because its assembly is fully automated, and Royal Pop introduces a new hand-wound interpretation of that movement.

What is the Royal Pop made from?

The case is produced using Swatch Bioceramic.

Bioceramic is Swatch's proprietary composite made from approximately two-thirds ceramic and one-third biosourced material derived from castor oil.

The material gives the Royal Pop its distinctive matte appearance while also allowing Swatch to produce the collection in particularly bold colours.

The watches also use sapphire crystals on both the front and rear, with anti-reflective treatment, while the hands and hour markers incorporate Super-LumiNova for low-light visibility.

What are the eight Swatch x Audemars Piguet Royal Pop models?

There are eight Royal Pop colourways:

  • Huit Blanc
  • Ocho Negro
  • Lan Ba
  • Green Eight
  • Blaue Acht
  • Orenji Hachi
  • Otto Rosso
  • OTG Roz

The use of the number eight across the different model names is another reference to the eight-sided Royal Oak bezel.

You can view the complete range in our Swatch x Audemars Piguet Royal Pop collection.

Rather than going into every colourway in depth here, we're also creating a separate guide comparing all eight Royal Pop models, their colour combinations and the differences between them.

Two different Royal Pop layouts

The collection isn't purely differentiated by colour.

There are also two different watch configurations.

Six models use a Lépine-style layout, with the crown positioned at 12 o'clock and two central hands displaying the hours and minutes.

Two models use a Savonnette-style layout, with the crown at 3 o'clock and an additional small-seconds display at 6 o'clock.

This is something worth considering if you're choosing between Royal Pop models, as there is a functional as well as visual difference between them.

Which Swatch x Audemars Piguet Royal Pop should you buy?

There isn't really one "best" Royal Pop because much of the appeal comes down to colour preference.

Someone wanting something relatively understated may prefer Ocho Negro, with its predominantly black-and-white appearance.

Huit Blanc is one of the most visually recognisable options thanks to its white case and multicoloured bezel screws.

Collectors wanting brighter colours have options such as OTG Roz, while Green Eight, Lan Ba, Orenji Hachi, Otto Rosso and Blaue Acht each take the Royal Pop concept in a different direction.

We're covering those differences in more detail in our dedicated Royal Pop eight-model comparison guide.

Is the Royal Pop the same as owning an Audemars Piguet Royal Oak?

No.

The collaboration uses authentic Audemars Piguet design input and is an official Audemars Piguet x Swatch product, but a Royal Pop is not an Audemars Piguet Royal Oak.

The Royal Pop is manufactured as a Swatch collaboration using Bioceramic and the SISTEM51 movement, while Audemars Piguet's Royal Oak sits within an entirely different luxury-watch category.

It is better to think of Royal Pop as a playful reinterpretation of familiar Royal Oak design cues rather than a lower-cost version of the Royal Oak itself.

Can the Royal Pop Be Worn on Your Wrist?

Although the Swatch x Audemars Piguet Royal Pop is originally designed as a pocket watch, compatible third-party wrist conversion straps allow it to be worn as a wristwatch.

These accessories securely hold the original watch module without permanent modification, with options including rubber straps and Bioceramic-style bracelets in a variety of colours.

Is the Swatch x Audemars Piguet Royal Pop limited edition?

Swatch hasn't positioned the initial Royal Pop release as a conventionally numbered limited edition.

At launch, the company stated that the collection would remain available for several months, while continuing to restrict purchases to one watch per person, per day and per selected store.

Individual models can nevertheless be difficult to source depending on demand and store availability.

For that reason, I'd be wary of listings describing Royal Pop simply as a "limited edition" unless they're referring to availability rather than an officially numbered production run.

Where can you buy the Swatch x Audemars Piguet Royal Pop in the UK?

Final thoughts on the Swatch x Audemars Piguet Royal Pop

The Royal Pop is unusual even by the standards of modern watch collaborations.

Rather than simply putting Audemars Piguet branding onto a conventional Swatch wristwatch, the two companies have combined elements of the Royal Oak, Swatch POP and mechanical SISTEM51 watchmaking into an entirely different format.

The eight colourways, octagonal Royal Oak-inspired case, mechanical movement and modular pocket-watch design make it one of the more distinctive watch releases of 2026.

Whether Royal Pop ultimately becomes a long-term collector favourite remains to be seen, but for anyone interested in either Swatch collaborations or Audemars Piguet, it's certainly an unusual chapter in the history of both brands.
